Even though there are ways and means to self-treat some illnesses or injuries, a broken tooth is definitely not one of them. Sadly, accidents regularly happen outside of dentists’ office hours. If tooth decay or an injury cause a break, you will need to know what steps to take if you are unable to find any immediate dental care.

You can get a broken tooth several ways. The two biggest ones are through tooth decay and injury, which can lead to breaks, fractures, and chips, which when left untreated, can lead to some real problems. While a broken tooth can cause a great deal of pain, it sometimes does not, it will all depend upon the extent of damage done. If there is pain, you can use an ice pack; however, remember to only use it on the outside of your mouth, this helps to reduce the swelling and ease the pain. If you use the ice inside your mouth, this will cause even greater pain, more so if there is any nerve damage. You can take pain reliever from your local pharmacist.

Bleeding could happen too; if this be the case, place sterile gauze in your mouth, gently surrounding your tooth. Bleeding usually only lasts for a couple of minutes. Make sure you rinse your mouth once the bleeding ceases. However, if the bleeding is heavy or does not stop for 15 minutes, call the emergency room for their recommendation.

Even when there is no pain or bleeding, there are a few steps you need to take in order to protect your tooth until you are able to get treatment. If you are able to collect the broken piece or pieces, rinse them and make sure to keep them in a safe place. Your dentist could use them to repair your broken tooth.
